So actually, I was 20 minutes early. Except that Joe had already been waiting for 40 minutes. But I never believed in linear time anyway. Since my life is a lot like this anyway, it was raining when I got to Maine, but I nevertheless decided that it would be a great idea to play ultimate frisbee at Joes high school. Every single person in Maine is apparently much better than I am at ultimate frisbee, but luckily the 20 people playing had no idea who I was or what team I was on. So, my primary weapon in the game was stealth and I usually just stood there unguarded until the thrower decided to cut his losses and chuck it randomly at my head. I did catch the game-winning, or rather game-ending point, but everyone was so wet and muddy that, to me, when it ended it seemed like everyone was a winner. I also took a fantastic fall into a huge mud puddle and completely ruined, in my usual spectacular fashion, one of the two non-pink pairs of pants that I had brought up for the weekend. In the book One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest, Randle Patrick McMurphy and Nurse Ratched employ the power of speech and Chief Bromden uses the power of silence until the end of the novel when he gains the power of speech. These cases prove that the greatest power is not held in speech or silence alone, but in the effective combination of the two. Many people believe verbal communication to be a very powerful way of expressing oneself. Words gain there power when the volume is raised and lowered alternatively to make a point. Additionally, the influence of speech can manifest itself in a number of ways. It can be used to humiliate, to intimidate, to flirt and to threaten, all of which are integral and pragmatic strategies to win a power struggle. McMurphy uses his power of speech to rally his fellow patients against Nurse Ratched who is constantly revoking their privileges. He also uses it furtively to acquire all that he desires, by conning the other patients. Throughout the novel he is very loud and is known for his unwavering ability to speak his mind and confront those that oppose him. Nurse Ratched uses her voice throughout the novel to intimidate the patients. She is the antagonist of the novel. The patients obsequiously follow Ratcheds command, until McMurphy comes along. They all fear that she will send them for shock therapy if they dont obey her. Nurse Ratched is the most daunting persona of the novel, due in large part to the use of her voice. . Throughout the novel both McMurphy and Nurse Ratched are continually trying to pull each other down. Nurse Ratched using her dominant speaking skills tries to prove to the patients that McMurphy is conning them with his vocalizations, Look at some of these gifts, as devoted fans of his might call them. In the present paper, I would like to provide my arguments against the new grading policy, whose nature is random selection of grades. In fact, there are two points of its fallibility: the fact that it actually measures students’ luck rather than their true achievements and that it destroys the entire purpose of education as the process of gaining knowledge and skills. First of all, it is necessary to define the term â€Å"grading†. According to the Educational Policies Committee, grading is â€Å"the main symbolic method of recording the evaluation of a student’s academic performance† (Educational Policies Committee, 1991). Evaluation, in turn, can be defined as assessment of the value of individual achievements, according to the existing educational standards. Education, according to Fuhrmann and Grasha (1983), is â€Å"the development of knowledge, skills and character of students through continuous motivation† (Fuhrmann and Grasha, 1983, p.156). As one can understand, the new grading policy does not set up the interrelation between the student’s academic attainments and performance and the symbolic mark, letter or figure. Those learners whose achievements are poorer have an opportunity to receive higher grades through random selection method, whereas more successful and hard-working students might fail in terms of grade. Consequently, one can sum up that the new policy actually measures the person’s luck, as the grade does not depend upon their efforts, skills or abilities. Furthermore, given the definition of education, it is possible to assume that the new grading policy contradicts to the purpose of college or university studies. This principle of grading does not motivate students to develop the necessary knowledge and skills, as their performance is not appropriately evaluated, i.e. the truth about the value of achievement is distorted. Therefore, students, being aware of the fact that the true information about their attainment will not be provided, are unlikely to work on their academic performance and lose the willingness to succeed. To sum up, a positive appraisal of one’s achievements is amongst the major incentives in the education system. Civil disobedience is another form of resisting the law, and simply violating and going against something youre not supposed to (Bertolino). Typically, they are violating what they are protesting about, like for example, segregation. The purpose of civil disobedience may sometimes be to make an unjust law public. This will force negotiations with certain officials, to get to court where someone can debate the law, or to put a stop to the injustice to an unjust law. For example, Henry David Thoreau was put in jail because he didnt pay a poll tax; he felt as though it wasnt worth and why should he have to do that. Another example would be, not according to the law, but when someone doesnt show up for work because they feel like their working for free, so they get fired. Same rules will apply, although you may have an opinion about something, that isnt what it says on paper, so now you must su ffer the consequences (Bertolino). As mentioned in the letter, Dr. King wanted had another focus, self-purification. Just like Gandhi believed, King also believed you should love everyone, even your own enemies. He also, had to give rid of the thought of him hating others. Dr. King relied on his Christian faith, and he believed that this is right in order for him to complete his mission of being self-purified. He didnt fail to make it known that, Gandhi was his model for making decisions, and for the fundamental for demanding that equal rights be put in place for Black in the United States of America (Bertolino). Throughout the late 1800s and early 1900s, Jim Crow Laws were used to segregate people by the color of their skin in the country. These laws affected people in their everyday life by controlling what restrooms they were allowed to use, the effects of their health care, and even educational purposes. Separating whites from blacks, with the assumption that everyone is being treated equally. It may have seemed as though, that the laws made a claim that everything was equal, but blacks always got the short end of the stick. Dr. King states in his letter, that there are two types of different laws. There is just and unjust, one having moral responsibility to disobey the unjust laws. King felt as though, an unjust law isnt eternal and natural law. There were many different laws in Alabama that surfaced throughout, in order for segregation to continue. In Alabama, it was against the law for a Negro and a white person to play together, have separate toilet facilities, no white female was allowed to nurse when a black male was placed, all bus stations should have separate waiting rooms and separate ticket windows for the colored and white, and all four laws were standard. Standard meaning, which is what stands and it will not change. These laws that were stated are very similar to the Jim Crow Laws that were being used before Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. died, which after his death they then were taken away. If anyone truly wants to understand how Dr. King feels, the Letter from Birmingham Jail is crucial enough for you to get a clear understanding, as to why he said what he said, and why he did what hes done. Dr. Kings death broke many hearts, along with activists. He was a leader, he was someone everyone could look up to. A leader with heart, passion, dedication, and commitment to ones race.
